Liberty HealthShare Celebrates 30 Years with Community-Focused Charitable Work

Liberty HealthShare marked its 30th anniversary in 2025 by expanding beyond member services into direct community support. The faith-based healthcare sharing ministry grew from five families in rural Virginia’s Gospel Light Mennonite Church to a national membership base served by approximately 160 team members at its Canton, Ohio headquarters.

Founded in 1995, the ministry maintains its core principle: members voluntarily share eligible medical expenses within a Christian community framework. This approach offers an alternative way of paying for healthcare expenses outside health insurance models.

Six Programs Address Diverse Member Needs

Chief Executive Officer Dorsey Morrow describes the ministry’s three-decade journey as one of “constant reinvention.” Six medical cost-sharing programs accommodate different budgets and circumstances, with suggested monthly share amounts from $87 to $362 for individuals. Families of four can begin participation at $319 monthly.

Year-round enrollment sets Liberty HealthShare apart from insurance enrollment periods tied to qualifying life events. Members select any healthcare provider without network restrictions, though partnership with the PHCS network offers opportunities for a higher likelihood of fair and reasonable pricing for medical expenses.

“We have a number of programs so that somebody can select whatever works best for their family,” Morrow notes. “With Liberty HealthShare you can join our membership, and if you determine it doesn’t work for you, you’re not locked into it.”

Flexibility extends beyond enrollment. Members may change programs or leave without annual commitment requirements.

Sharing Hearts Fund Addresses Pediatric Wellness

The Sharing Hearts Fund for Pediatric Wellness launched in 2025 as Liberty HealthShare’s charitable arm. Funded entirely through donations and grants separate from member contributions, the initiative completed two grant funding rounds in its first year.

April 2025 grants totaled approximately $17,000 for Stark County, Ohio families in need. December’s second round distributed roughly $10,000 in additional support. Services paid for include physical examinations, dental care, vision screenings with eyeglasses, and hearing tests.

These fundamental pediatric wellness procedures often get postponed when families face financial constraints. A board of Stark County social service professionals evaluates applications, including Jenn Warner of the Legacy Project, Scott Schnyders of Refuge of Hope, Pastor Walter Moss, and Amanda Anschutz of Compassion Delivered.

Day of Sharing Combats Regional Hunger

Liberty HealthShare distributed $25,000 among five Canton-area hunger relief organizations in November through its Day of Sharing initiative. The Stark County Hunger Task Force, Refuge of Hope, North Canton Cares Pantry, Salvation Army of Canton, and Salvation Army of Massillon each received $5,000.

The contribution will provide more than 100,000 meals to Stark County families. Recipient organizations navigate mounting challenges: food price inflation, increased demand from economic hardship, federal funding cuts to nutrition assistance programs, and decreased donations from individuals and corporations.

Matthew 25:35-40 informs the ministry’s vision statement, equating feeding the hungry with serving Christ directly.

Vision Program Joins Dental Sharing Option

Liberty Vision launched in November 2025 through partnership with national vision administrator NVA. Suggested monthly share amounts total $7 for individuals, $13 for couples, and $25 for families of four.

More than 100,000 vision care professionals participate in a national network, spanning private practice optometrists and ophthalmologists, plus major optical retail chains. Routine eye examinations, prescription glasses, contact lenses, and LASIK surgery fall under the supplemental program’s scope.

Members may add Liberty Vision during annual renewal periods. The supplemental program requires membership in one of Liberty HealthShare’s six medical cost-sharing programs.

A supplemental dental sharing program was launched in 2024 following member feedback. Suggested monthly dental share amounts start at $35. Members visit any licensed dentist without network restrictions.

Personalized Support Defines Member Experience

Nurses employed by Liberty HealthShare maintain regular contact with members navigating medical situations. Dedicated team members guide individuals through healthcare decisions and provider interactions.

Prayer forms a fundamental component of ministry operations. Staff distribute member prayer requests internally each Friday. Team members pray with and for members facing health challenges.

Nearly 80 percent of surveyed members reported satisfaction or high satisfaction with their Liberty HealthShare membership. External ratings reflect member experiences: 4.5 stars on Google, 4.5 stars on Trustpilot, and A+ status with the Better Business Bureau.

Liberty HealthShare holds both Candid’s 2025 GuideStar Gold Seal and Charity Navigator’s 4-Star rating. No other healthcare sharing organization in the United States maintains both recognitions, which assess transparency and accountability standards expected of nonprofit organizations.

“In my role, I frequently talk about the godly pride I feel knowing that our ministry is a ‘force for good’ in the lives of members,” Morrow said in Liberty HealthShare’s Quarterly Member Magazine. “We are making a difference in their lives, not just providing a service. Our commitment to leaving an indelible mark on those who interact with our ministry has expanded through our charitable efforts.”
