Online Casinos Are Becoming Multi Product Platforms Rather Than Game Sites
The distinction between different types of gambling sites is gradually being lost. This is because it’s becoming more and more common for sites to offer multiple gambling products in one place. Some online casinos, for example, don’t just offer casino games; they also have bingo, lottery, sports betting or other ways for people to gamble online.
Multi-product gambling sites are common these days. It’s not just online casinos that have multiple types of gambling available; some sportsbooks, bingo sites and lottery platforms have also diversified their offerings. However, when a site has numerous gambling types readily accessible, this has the potential to increase problems for the consumer.
Issues With Multi-Product Online Casinos
A key problem is that when a site has two or more gambling products, it can expose players to types of gambling they might not have considered participating in before. Someone who joins an online casino might just want to try a few casino games. However, they may also encounter the sports betting section and decide to place a wager on a sporting event.
Different gambling products may affect people in different ways. Someone who manages their casino play within set limits, for example, may find sports betting more difficult to control. Platforms that offer only one product naturally limit exposure to other formats, while multi-product sites make it easier for users to move between activities. This broader exposure may increase risk for some individuals, particularly where the products differ in pace, structure and patterns of use.
Access to several gambling products through a single platform may be viewed as convenient, but it can also create additional risks. When visiting online casinos, players might not realise that the presence of sports betting, bingo games and lotteries could actually cause additional problems.
Some consumers might find multi-product online casinos excessive. They’d rather stick to a platform that focuses on a single type of gambling, i.e. casino games, instead of one that tries to tick every box. Greater variety is not necessarily beneficial for every user. Some consumers may prefer platforms with a clearly defined offering, rather than encountering additional gambling products they did not initially intend to access.
Multi-Product Casino Sites and Responsible Gambling
Online casinos that are licensed in Ireland are required to actively promote responsible gambling. The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) is the body responsible for regulating Ireland’s gambling industry. It was created by the Gambling Regulation Act 2024, though it only began operating in March 2025. It mandates that all licensees follow strict requirements in order to protect consumers. Some of the things that licensed sites do to promote responsible gambling include:
- Checking the age and identity of everyone who signs up
- Offering tools such as deposit, wager and loss limits
- Providing links to organisations including Gamblers Anonymous Ireland and GamblingCare.ie
- Letting members block access to the site through time-out and self-exclusion
- Sending reality checks to remind members of their gambling activity and habits
The thing is, these can only go so far. When an online casino has other types of gambling available besides casino games, there’s nothing stopping people from trying out new gambling forms.
The GRAI works to promote safe gambling practices and help those in need. Its ongoing aim is to reduce the negative effects of online gambling as much as possible. The fact that online casinos offer more than just casino games can pose a problem since it exposes potentially vulnerable people to multiple ways to gamble.
Dealing With Multi-Product Gambling Platforms
Going forward, more needs to be done to educate people on the potential risks of multi-product online casinos, and any other sites with multiple types of gambling available. It may not seem like these sites can be problematic, but exposure to extra products can lead to issues both short- and long-term.
The consumer isn’t necessarily fully protected when they’re able to easily access many products through a single account. Some people might be more susceptible to one form of gambling than another.
One could argue that online casinos should focus on casino games, sportsbooks on sports betting and so on. In practice, however, much of the industry has moved towards a multi-product model. This leaves regulators such as the GRAI to assess how these platforms affect consumers and whether existing safeguards remain appropriate. Where evidence indicates that access to several gambling products through one account increases the risk of harm, further consumer-protection measures may need to be considered.
