Lightness and Strength: New Materials in Fishing Reel Construction
A few decades ago, choosing a material for a fishing reel was relatively straightforward. Metal meant strength and durability, while plastic was generally seen as a compromise used to reduce cost. Today, manufacturers are pursuing a much more difficult combination: a reel that is light, rigid and durable at the same time. In recent years, this has become a clear trend, with manufacturers competing to reduce reel weight without compromising performance.
One of the clearest examples is Daiwa’s LT (Light & Tough) concept. The idea is not simply to make a reel lighter. Instead, the entire construction is redesigned to reduce the weight of the body, rotor, spool and other components while maintaining the rigidity required for reliable operation. The result is a generation of reels that can be considerably lighter than their predecessors without becoming fragile.
Modern composites play an important role in this development. Daiwa, for example, uses ZAION and the more accessible ZAION V, carbon-based composite materials that combine low weight with high rigidity. ZAION V is used not only in the bodies of spinning reels, but also in rotors. Reducing the weight and inertia of rotating components can make the reel feel more responsive and improve the overall balance of the tackle.
Shimano has followed a similar path with CI4+, its advanced carbon-fiber composite material. It is used in reel bodies and rotors to reduce weight while retaining the structural rigidity needed for demanding fishing. Metal has certainly not disappeared, however. It remains essential for components where strength, precision and long-term durability are particularly important.
The same trend can be seen in baitcasting and other multiplier reels. Here, reducing weight can have an especially noticeable effect, as a compact and lightweight reel improves the balance of the entire setup and makes repeated casting more comfortable. Daiwa uses ZAION V in the frames and bodies of selected multiplier reels, while Shimano employs CI4+ in comparable applications. In both cases, composites allow manufacturers to remove weight without turning that weight saving into a compromise in reliability.
Modern fishing reels are therefore becoming less like simple assemblies of metal parts and more like carefully engineered combinations of different materials. Metal remains valuable where maximum strength is required, while advanced composites offer an impressive combination of low weight and rigidity. The modern race to build lighter reels is consequently about more than numbers on a specification sheet. The real challenge is to remove every unnecessary gram while preserving strength, rigidity and durability. Advances in materials are making that balance increasingly achievable.
