Roulette is a genuinely simple game. There is a wheel with numbers. A ball goes around it. You place chips on what you think will happen, and a few seconds later, everybody knows who won. How Does Online Roulette Work?

The European Roulette

In European roulette the numbers are not arranged in any particular order around the physical wheel, so don’t expect to see 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. The wheel uses a deliberately mixed sequence. The familiar rows of consecutive numbers exist only on the betting layout.

American Online Roulette Adds 00

American roulette normally uses 38 pockets. It keeps the 0 and adds another spot for 00. That extra green result changes the odds of every bet.

European roulette has a normal house advantage of approximately 2.70%. American roulette is about 5.26%. The payouts don’t generally double to make up for it. That’s why experienced players often prefer the European version when both are available.

French Roulette Can Improve Certain Bets

French roulette is also a single zero wheel but may include special rules such as La Partage or En Prison.

La Partage can return half of an affected even money wager when zero wins. For example, if you bet $20 on red and zero appears, you would get $10 back instead of losing the full $20.

En Prison can effectively hold the wager for another spin, and if that next spin wins, the original stake is usually returned without any profit.

When the relevant protection applies, the house edge on even money wagers can fall to around 1.35%, which should be reason enough to get more attention from players than it usually does.

How the Roulette Table Works

Inside the main grid are numbers 1 to 36, arranged in 12 rows of three. Zero sits separately. Around that are the outside betting areas.

That simple arrangement lets the same piece of felt create many different wagers.

Put a chip directly on one number and you are making a straight up bet, which covers only that number. Place it on the line between two adjoining numbers and it becomes a split bet, covering both. A chip at the intersection of four numbers is a corner bet, while a chip at the end of a row of three numbers creates a street bet. You can also cover two neighboring rows with a six line bet. With so many choices, roulette is actually a game of geometry.

Outside the main number grid, the bets cover larger groups. Dozens cover 12 numbers at a time, while columns also cover 12. Bets on red or black, odd or even, and 1-18 or 19-36 each cover 18 numbers.

Straight Up Roulette Bets

A straight up wager covers one number. If you place $10 directly on 23, only 23 wins, with a payout of 35:1. So, a winning $10 wager therefore produces $350 profit, with your $10 original stake also returned. The chance of winning on a European wheel is 1 in 37 or 2.7%, while in American it’s 1 in 38, or 2.6%, due to single and double zeros.

Split Bets Cover Two Numbers

Place a chip on the dividing line between two adjoining numbers. Now either number can win. The normal payout is 17:1. You have doubled your coverage compared with a straight up bet, so the winning is also more likely.

Street Bets Cover Three

A street covers one horizontal row of three numbers. For example, 7, 8 and 9 can be covered together. The traditional payout is 11:1. This can be a convenient middle ground for somebody who likes number betting but doesn’t want to depend on one pocket.

Corner Bets Cover Four

A chip placed where four numbers meet covers all four. A typical example could be 10, 11, 13 and 14. The normal payout is 8:1. The game becomes way easier if you look at the table layout, which shows rows and columns and which numbers are next to each other.

Six Line Bets Cover Six

Two adjacent rows can be covered together. That produces six numbers and traditionally pays 5:1. Again, greater coverage produces a lower payout, but it also increases the chances of winning.

Dozens and Columns Cover 12 Numbers

The dozen bets divide numbers 1 through 36 into three groups. 1-12. 13-24. 25-36. Each normally pays 2:1.

Columns also contain 12 numbers and use the same payout. Zero belongs to none of the three dozens and none of the three columns. If zero appears, those standard wagers lose.

Red and Black Are Close to Half the Wheel

Eighteen numbers are red and eighteen numbers are black. This produces the most famous roulette bet. But on a European wheel there are 37 results, not 36. That means the chance of red is the same as is for black, 18/37.

The missing result is zero. This is where the casino edge comes from. If red and black genuinely covered every possible outcome and paid 1:1, there would be no ordinary house advantage on the bet.

So, why does roulette pay 35:1 instead of 36:1? This is the entire game in one question. A European straight up bet has one winning number and 36 losing numbers. If the wager were paid at true odds, the payoff would be 36:1. Roulette traditionally pays 35:1. That difference produces the house edge.
