Zoom the date window firstStart here, because it is the single most common giveaway and the easiest to see.

The date should sit square in the window. Even gaps left and right, even gaps top and bottom. If the number floats high, or crowds one side, walk. Alignment is a build tolerance, and a seller who lets one slip will let others slip too.

Check the font while you are there. Look at the shape of the 4 and the 6. Off-brand date wheels give themselves away in the digits before anything else.

Then the dial textBlow the photo up until the text is pixelated, then look at spacing rather than sharpness.

Lines of text should sit parallel to the markers, not drift. Letter spacing should be even across a word. The coronet is the hardest part of a dial to get right, so look at it last and hardest.

A dial that prints crisp but sits rotated two degrees is worse than a dial that prints slightly soft and sits true. Rotation is the one you will notice forever.

Bezel, pearl, handsThree quick ones.

The pearl at 12 should line up with the marker underneath it. Not near it. On it.

Bezel insert numerals should be even around the full circle, and the gap between insert and case should be consistent. Uneven gap means the insert is seated badly.

Hands should point true at 12 when the time is set to 12. Ask for a photo at 12 if the seller has not posted one. Refusing that request tells you something.

Bracelet, clasp, caseEnd links should meet the case with no daylight. Look at where the bracelet meets the lugs and check for a gap.

Clasp stamping should be clean and centred. Blurred stamping is cheap tooling, and cheap tooling rarely stops at the clasp.

On the case, look at the transition between brushed and polished surfaces. That line should be sharp. A soft, smeared transition is the tell that the finishing was rushed.

The clearest split is size by generation. The 116610 family is 40mm. The 126610 family is 41mm, with slimmer lugs. They photograph almost identically and they wear differently, so check which one a listing means.

The green ones cause the most trouble. Kermit, the 16610LV, is a green bezel with a black dial. Hulk, the 116610LV, is green bezel and green dial together. Starbucks, the 126610LV, is back to a green bezel with a black dial, at 41mm. Two of those three are the same colour scheme in different generations, which is exactly why listings mix them up.

Blue splits the same way. Bluesy covers the 116613LB at 40mm and the 126613LB at 41mm. Smurf, the 116619LB, is white gold and blue all through. The 126618LB is yellow gold and blue. Four blue Submariners, four different watches, and the metal is not the same across them.

Get the reference right before you judge anything else. Half of what gets called a flaw is really a buyer holding the wrong photo for comparison.
