Reddit Marketing Strategy in 2026: Why Reddit Now Shapes What Google and ChatGPT Recommend
A Reddit marketing strategy used to be a nice-to-have. A side channel for startups with time to kill.
That is no longer true.
Today, Reddit threads sit at the top of Google for the searches where buyers make decisions. And the same threads feed the answers given by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s own AI Overviews.
If your brand is missing from those conversations, it is missing from the answer.
Here is what the data shows, and how to build a Reddit strategy that works in the AI search era.
Reddit now sits on top of Google’s buying searches
To measure it, we checked ten typical “best software” searches on Google US (desktop, September 27, 2026, using the DataForSEO API). The kind of queries a buyer types right before choosing a tool.
| Search query | Best Reddit position | AI Overview shown |
| best crm for small business | #2 | Yes |
| best project management software | #3 | Yes |
| best accounting software for small business | #2 | Yes |
| best password manager | #1 | Yes |
| best website builder | #3 | Yes |
| best vpn | #1 (three threads in the top 5) | Yes |
| best help desk software | #2 | Yes |
| best email marketing software | Not in top 10 | Yes |
| best seo tools | Not in top 10 | Yes |
| best payroll software for small business | Not in top 10 | Yes |
The result is hard to ignore.
In 7 searches out of 10, a Reddit thread ranked in the top three organic results. On “best vpn”, Reddit held three of the first five spots on its own.
And all 10 searches displayed an AI Overview above the organic results.
Ten queries is a snapshot, not a census. But the pattern is consistent across categories as different as payroll, security and CRM: when people ask “what should I use?”, Google answers with Reddit.
Why AI answers lean on Reddit
Two deals explain a lot.
In February 2024, Google signed an agreement with Reddit to use its content for AI, reportedly worth around $60 million a year according to Reuters. In May 2024, OpenAI announced its own partnership with the platform.
The logic is simple. Reddit has more than 100 million daily active users, according to the company’s filings, and they write exactly what an AI model needs: honest reviews, comparisons, complaints and recommendations, ranked by votes.
A brand’s website is a claim. A Reddit thread where ten strangers recommend the same tool looks like proof.
When a brand is mentioned positively across several threads, by different users, over several months, it starts to read as the consensus pick. Consensus is exactly what AI assistants tend to repeat.
One thread, two channels of visibility
For twenty years, visibility meant ranking on page one of Google.
That still matters. But a second layer now sits on top: the AI answer.
Marketers call the discipline of appearing in those answers GEO, for Generative Engine Optimization. In plain terms: making sure your brand is part of what ChatGPT or Google’s AI says, not just one of the links underneath.
Reddit is the rare place where both layers meet. The same discussion can rank on Google and be quoted in an AI answer. One good contribution, two channels.
This shift has created a new category of specialists. Agencies such as UpvotePartners now focus entirely on Reddit marketing and AI visibility. The work looks less like advertising and more like community management combined with SEO: finding the threads that rank, understanding what buyers really ask, and contributing answers the community actually upvotes.
A Reddit marketing strategy that works in 2026
Most brands fail on Reddit because they treat it like an ad platform. They drop a link, get downvoted, get banned, and conclude that “Reddit doesn’t work.”
The brands that win follow a different playbook.
- Start with the threads that already rank
Search Google for “best [your category] reddit” and “[your category] alternatives reddit”. Open the top threads.
These are your priority. They already get traffic from Google, and they are the ones AI tools are most likely to pick up.
- Choose communities, not just keywords
Every subreddit has its own rules, moderators and culture. What is welcome in r/SaaS can get you removed from r/Entrepreneur.
Read the rules. Read the top posts of the last month. Understand what people upvote before you write a word.
- Build a real account history
A brand-new account recommending a product is the fastest way to get flagged.
Spend weeks being useful before mentioning anything commercial. Answer questions in your field of expertise, with no link and no pitch.
- Answer the question, then mention the brand
The best-performing comments solve the problem first. The product comes second, if it is genuinely relevant.
And be transparent. If you work for the brand, say so. Undisclosed promotion breaks Reddit’s rules and, in the US, the FTC’s guidelines on endorsements.
- Stay consistent and measure what matters
Reddit rewards consistency over months, not a one-weekend push.
Track three signals: the threads where your brand now appears, your branded searches on Google, and whether ChatGPT and Perplexity start naming you when asked about your category.
The ten-minute test for your brand
Any company can check its own exposure today:
- Search Google for “best [your category] reddit”.
- Open the top three threads and count your brand mentions.
- Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the same question.
- Compare the brands they recommend with the ones in the threads.
If your competitors show up in both places and you do not, the gap is already costing you deals.
For B2B companies, the stakes are high. A software buyer comparing three tools often reads Reddit before booking a single demo, then asks ChatGPT for a summary. If both point to the same names, the shortlist is decided before sales gets involved.
FAQ
Does Reddit marketing help SEO?
Indirectly, yes. Links from Reddit are nofollow, but Reddit threads themselves rank on Google for buying searches, and brand mentions in those threads feed both search visibility and AI answers.
Is marketing on Reddit allowed?
Yes, within each community’s rules. Self-promotion without contribution gets removed, and anyone posting on behalf of a brand should disclose it.
How long does a Reddit marketing strategy take to work?
Expect a few months. Account history and trust take time to build, but useful threads keep ranking and getting cited long after they are posted.
