How to choose the ideal tyre type for your engine forklift
Tyre selection is one of the less visible but more operationally significant decisions in managing a fleet of engine forklifts. The right tyre type for the operating environment keeps machines stable, preserves floor surfaces, and reduces rolling resistance and fuel consumption. The wrong type creates handling problems, accelerates floor damage, and in severe cases creates a stability risk under load.
The three primary tyre types available for engine forklifts are cushion tyres, pneumatic tyres, and solid rubber (solid pneumatic) tyres. Each is optimised for different operating conditions.
Cushion tyres: the indoor solution
Cushion tyres are made from solid rubber bonded directly to the metal wheel. They are the thinnest of the three options and sit the machine lower to the ground, which improves stability during lifting.
Cushion tyres are designed for smooth, sealed indoor floors. They provide good traction on concrete and epoxy-coated surfaces, create minimal floor marking, and offer low rolling resistance on smooth surfaces, which contributes to fuel efficiency in indoor applications.
Their limitation is outdoors. Cushion tyres on rough or uneven outdoor surfaces vibrate significantly, transmit road shock to the operator and the load, and wear rapidly on surfaces with any texture or grit. Engine forklifts fitted with cushion tyres should not be regularly operated on unsealed or rough-surface outdoor areas.
Best for: Distribution centres, warehouse floors, food and beverage facilities, any operation where the machine operates exclusively or primarily on sealed indoor surfaces.
Pneumatic tyres: the outdoor and mixed-surface option
Pneumatic tyres for engine forklifts are air-filled, similar in principle to vehicle tyres. They absorb surface irregularities through air compression, which makes them the appropriate choice for outdoor operations, rough terrain, and sites with mixed surfaces.
On sealed outdoor hardstand, loading yards, and access roads between buildings, pneumatic tyres provide the surface compliance that cushion tyres cannot. On sites with unsealed gravel, aggregate, or rough ground, they are the only practical option for sustained operation.
The trade-off is that pneumatic tyres are vulnerable to puncture on sites with sharp debris, require pressure monitoring, and when flat, create an immediate safety and operational problem. Sites with significant metal debris, broken concrete, or sharp aggregate present a puncture risk that needs to be managed through site preparation or tyre type selection.
Best for: Outdoor operations, mixed indoor and outdoor applications, loading yards, construction material sites, any environment with surface variation.
Solid rubber (solid pneumatic) tyres: the durability option
Solid rubber tyres, sometimes called solid pneumatic tyres because they have the same profile dimensions as pneumatic tyres, are made from solid rubber compound rather than air-filled. They combine some of the surface compliance of a pneumatic tyre with the puncture resistance of a solid construction.
For engine forklifts operating in environments where puncture risk is high, such as recycling facilities, demolition sites, waste handling, steel service centres, and other sites with consistent sharp debris, solid rubber tyres eliminate the downtime and maintenance cost of puncture management.
The trade-off compared to pneumatic tyres is higher rolling resistance and more vibration transmission to the machine and operator, particularly on rough surfaces. Solid rubber is tougher, but it is not as comfortable or fuel-efficient as pneumatic on mixed terrain.
Best for: Recycling facilities, scrap and steel handling, demolition operations, any environment where puncture frequency on pneumatic tyres is a significant operational cost.
The mixed indoor/outdoor application
The most common tyre selection challenge for engine forklifts arises when the machine works across both indoor sealed floors and outdoor areas. Neither cushion nor solid pneumatic tyres handle both environments optimally.
The standard approach for mixed applications is pneumatic tyres, which tolerate indoor smooth surfaces adequately while delivering the outdoor performance the application also requires. The compromise is slightly higher rolling resistance on indoor floors and marginal increased floor marking risk compared with cushion tyres.
Where indoor floor preservation is a priority alongside outdoor capability, some operations specify tyres with specific tread patterns or rubber compounds designed to minimise indoor marking while retaining outdoor performance.
Getting the selection right
The right tyre type for any fleet of engine forklifts comes down to the primary operating environment, the floor surfaces involved, and the site conditions for debris and rough terrain. Selecting the wrong type is not a disaster, but it does mean the machine is working at a disadvantage for the majority of its operating hours.
