How to Spec Ladders for a Manufacturing Facility: Duty Ratings, Fleet Sizing and Bulk Buying

Buying access equipment for a factory is not the same as buying one ladder. You are specifying a fleet that has to cover a range of jobs, survive daily industrial use, and stay inspectable for years. Get it right at the buying stage and the rest gets easier.

Duty rating first, everything else second

The single most important decision is duty rating, and it is the one most often got wrong.

Under EN 131, the meaningful split for you is between professional and non-professional specification. Professional equipment is built for regular occupational use, with higher load ratings and more robust construction. Non-professional is built for occasional household jobs.

Domestic grade equipment on an industrial site fails early, and it fails in ways that are hard to spot. Stiles flex more, fixings work loose faster, feet wear quicker. It also tends to fail your own inspection regime within a year, which means you buy it twice.

So when you are looking at ladders for sale for a facility, filter on duty rating before you look at price. A professional grade unit at twice the cost that lasts four times as long is not the expensive option.

Match material to environment

Aluminium is the default and it earns that. Light, strong, does not rot, easy to handle. Avoid it anywhere near live electrical work.

Fibreglass is non conductive, which makes it the only sensible choice for electrical maintenance, and it is stiffer than aluminium. It is heavier and pricier, and prolonged UV exposure degrades it, so store it inside.

Timber still has a place in some workshop settings and is non conductive, but it is heavy, needs looking after, and hides damage well. Rarely the right call for a modern facility.

If any of your team touch electrical panels, spec fibreglass for that work and colour code it so it does not get used as general kit.

Work out what jobs you actually have

Before sizing a fleet, list your height tasks and group them by what they need.

Low level, frequent, short tasks such as stock picking and reaching shelving want a platform or podium step with a proper standing platform and handrail. People spend far more time on these than they admit, and a platform beats a stepladder every time for comfort and safety.

Mid level maintenance work on machinery, panels and lighting wants professional stepladders and platform ladders in a couple of heights.

Higher access to roof plant, gantries and high level services wants extension or combination equipment, and often a mobile tower instead if the work runs long.

Anything above around three metres on a leaning ladder needs a wider base or stabiliser under current standards, so factor that in rather than being surprised by it.

Sizing the fleet

Two rules of thumb worth applying.

Buy for location, not for the store. If a piece of equipment lives in the maintenance store and the job is at the far end of the building, someone will improvise instead of walking. Position equipment near where the work is, even if that means owning more of it.

Then add a margin for the inspection cycle. Equipment gets pulled out of service for inspection and repair. If you own exactly enough, then the day something fails, somebody uses the wrong thing. Around ten to fifteen percent spare capacity is sensible.

Getting the commercial side right

Buying as a fleet gives you leverage, so use it.

Standardise on as few models as you can. It makes training simpler, inspection quicker, and spares easier to hold. Ask about trade account pricing and payment terms rather than paying list.

Check what spares are available before you commit, particularly feet, because feet are the first thing to wear and being able to replace them instead of the whole ladder changes the lifetime cost significantly.

And do ask about price matching. Access equipment is a competitive market and there is usually room to move.

Do not forget the surrounding kit

The ladder itself is rarely the whole purchase. Budget for storage racking or wall brackets to keep equipment off the floor, inspection tags and holders so your regime works from day one, stabilisers and stand offs where the geometry needs them, and tool belts or holsters so people are not climbing with their hands full.

Adding those at the start costs less than adding them after an incident.

One last thing

Involve the people who will actually climb the thing. They know which existing piece of equipment everybody avoids and why, and that information is worth more than any spec sheet.
