Is October a Good Time to Install Solar Panels?
Most people think about solar in June, when the sun is out and the energy bill feels like a problem for later. By October the days are shorter and solar drops down the list. That timing is backwards. Autumn is one of the most practical times of year to get panels on the roof.
Installers have more room in the diary
Demand for solar peaks in spring and early summer. Lead times stretch, and getting a survey booked can take weeks. Through autumn and winter, diaries usually open up. You get more choice over install dates and more time with the surveyor, which matters because the design is what decides your savings.
You are ready for the months that count
A system fitted in October will produce less in its first few months than one fitted in May. That is true, but it misses the point. The months that drive your return are March to September. Install now and the paperwork, the export tariff and any teething issues are sorted before the long days arrive, rather than losing part of the best season to a waiting list.
Panels still work in winter
Solar panels run on daylight, not heat. They keep generating on cloudy and cold days, and they work slightly more efficiently at lower temperatures. Output in December is a fraction of July’s, but it is not zero, and every unit you generate is one you do not buy from the grid at full price.
The VAT relief has a deadline
Residential solar panels and batteries currently carry 0% VAT in Great Britain. That relief runs until 31 March 2027, after which it is due to return to 5%. Leaving the decision until next spring cuts it fine once you allow for the survey, system design and grid notification.
What about the weather?
Rain and high winds can push an install day back, and scaffolding needs safe conditions. A good installer plans around this. Most domestic installs take one to two days on the roof, so a short dry spell is usually enough.
What to sort before you book
- Your annual electricity use in kWh, from your bills or supplier account
- Whether you want battery storage now or later, as it affects the choice of inverter
- Any roof repairs, so they can be done while the scaffolding is already up
- Planning rules if you live in a conservation area or a listed building
If you are weighing up solar panel installation in Bristol, an autumn survey gives you time to compare quotes properly and have the system running before spring. Check that whoever you use is MCS certified, as you need that to receive Smart Export Guarantee payments.
