London Coach Gary Ousby Takes an Adaptive Approach to Longevity Coaching

Drawing on 25 years in health, elite sport and performance, the Physical Wellbeing founder treats a pause in a routine as a cue to adjust the plan

LONDON, UK — [PUBLICATION DATE]

A health plan can look sensible on paper and still come apart in a busy week, a family illness or a long trip.

Gary Ousby, a longevity health coach and founder of Physical Wellbeing Ltd, focuses on what happens when a routine stops fitting someone’s life. Rather than treating a disrupted plan as failure, he believes the next step is to work out what can realistically continue and what needs to change.

Most people already know some of what looking after themselves involves. The more difficult part is keeping it going.

A Career That Started in a Gym

Gary has worked in health and performance for more than 25 years. He first came to it as a gym investor from a different industry and found he was drawn to the people side. From there he moved through professional football, elite sport and other high-performance environments.

In his account, that work left him convinced that he is always dealing with a person and not a programme. Assessment and clear direction matter, but information alone is not enough.

He is a certified neuroscience coach, longevity coach and advanced life coach, and a certified DNAFit practitioner. He describes the training as a way of staying curious, not collecting titles.

What the Habit Research Says

A 2010 study led by Phillippa Lally at University College London offers some context for that thinking. Published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, it asked 96 volunteers to pick an eating, drinking or activity behaviour and repeat it daily for 12 weeks.

Eighty-two supplied enough data, and the researchers’ model fitted 62 of them, 39 well.

For those 39, the median estimated time to reach 95 per cent of peak automaticity was 66 days. Individual estimates ranged from 18 to 254, and because the study ran for 12 weeks, the longer figures are projections from the model, not observed completion times.

More consistent repetition went with a better model fit, and missing one opportunity did not materially affect the process. Very inconsistent participants did not succeed in forming habits, the researchers said, though the consistency required is not yet known.

Nobody tested coaching, so the findings give context for Gary’s thinking and no evidence for his methods.

Pacing the Change

Gary’s approach begins with the understanding that a plan that works in one period of life may not work in another. Work pressures, family responsibilities, illness or travel can change what someone has time and energy to maintain.

Rather than treating every interruption as a reason to start again, he focuses on what remains realistic and where expectations need to shift. That might mean changing the pace of progress or revisiting priorities instead of trying to force the original routine to continue unchanged.

He describes this as pacing change: starting gently, building confidence through small wins and adjusting when circumstances become difficult. The aim is to make progress more sustainable, not to promise that every routine will remain uninterrupted.

His longevity coaching distinguishes between lifespan and healthspan, the part of life spent in good health. Strength, mobility and independence are examples of what this can mean, though coaching cannot promise a longer life, reverse ageing, prevent disease or guarantee later independence.

It starts with a conversation about a client’s health, lifestyle and history, what has worked before and what they hope to be doing in ten, twenty or thirty years.

Coaching is not a substitute for medical or mental health care.

When something falls outside a coach’s scope, Gary brings in the right professional, such as a doctor or physiotherapist. Physical Wellbeing Ltd works with clients across the UK and online.
