Ontor’s Journey From Creativity to Trusted Freelance Web Designer in Malaysia

A Real Story Behind the Screens
This isn’t a perfect success story or a journey full of shortcuts. It’s a real look at how curiosity, creativity, and consistency slowly shaped my path into web design, and how it eventually became what I do professionally.
My name is Ontor, and I’m a Freelance Web Designer based in Malaysia. Before web design became my career, it was simply something I was curious about. I didn’t start with a master plan or bold promises. I started by following what genuinely interested me.
And that interest began long before I ever wrote a line of code.
A childhood of creativity, where it all began.
From a young age, I was drawn to creative work. Drawing, sketching, and building things were part of my everyday life. I enjoyed experimenting even when the results weren’t perfect.
Back then, I didn’t know terms like design systems or user experience. I only knew that creating things helped me focus and express ideas in a way that felt natural. Looking back now, those early habits shaped how I work today, with curiosity, patience, and a willingness to learn.
Creativity was my foundation.
Moving to Malaysia, A new chapter
In 2018, I moved to Malaysia for my studies. That decision became a major turning point in my life. Living in a new country challenged me personally and professionally, exposing me to new cultures, ideas, and a fast-growing digital environment.
Malaysia gave me the space to rethink my future.
Surrounded by an expanding tech ecosystem, web design stopped being just an interest; it became a serious pursuit. I knew this was something I wanted to build with discipline and long-term focus.
Late Nights, Bugs, and Learning Web Development Through Challenges
My web design journey started mostly through self-learning. I spent countless nights working with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Often, nothing worked. One small mistake could break an entire layout.
There were moments of frustration and self-doubt. But every small win by fixing a bug, completing a layout, seeing a site load properly, kept me moving forward. Over time, the logic behind web design began to make sense.
That’s when I learned an important lesson:
Progress doesn’t come from perfection. It comes from persistence.
Learning From the Global WordPress Community, From WordCamp Malaysia to Asia
In 2019, I attended WordCamp Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, and it was an experience I truly enjoyed. It was my first WordPress event, and it gave me the chance to connect with the local WordPress community and learn more about what was happening in the region. After that experience, I knew I didn’t want to miss another WordCamp.
One of the most impactful experiences in my journey was attending WordCamp Asia 2024 in Taipei. Spending four days with contributors, developers, and leaders from around the world gave me a broader perspective on the future of the web.
It wasn’t about trends; it was about collaboration, sustainability, and responsibility.
When Real Client Work Changed My Perspective
Once I started working on real projects, web design became more than design; it became a responsibility.
Every website represented someone’s business, reputation, and future. I began noticing a pattern: many websites looked great on launch day, but slowly broke down over time. Plugins went outdated, security updates were ignored, and performance dropped.
Not because people didn’t care, but because they didn’t realize how much ongoing care a website needs. That realization reshaped my role as a web designer.
Why Web Maintenance Became a Core Service
Building a website is only the beginning.
A website is a living system. Without regular updates, monitoring, and optimization, even a well-designed site can lose its value quickly. That’s why web maintenance naturally became a core part of my work.
Today, a large part of what I do focuses on Web Maintenance Services in Malaysia, helping businesses keep their websites:
- Secure
- Fast
- Updated
- Stable
- Reliable
For me, maintenance isn’t just technical support, it’s long-term trust.
A Quiet Moment of Recognition
Malaysian Website Awards (MWA) 2025
In 2025, Ontor Web received the Best Website Award (Personal Category) at the Malaysian Website Awards, organized by Exabytes.
This recognition meant a lot, not because of the title, but because of what it represented:
- Clean, modern, mobile-first design
- Performance-focused development
- Strong user experience
- Authentic personal branding
For someone who started with curiosity and self-learning, it was a meaningful reminder that consistent, honest work does get noticed.
How These Experiences Shape My Work Today
I no longer focus only on how a website looks. I focus on how it performs, how it ages, and how it supports users over time.
I prioritize:
- Stability over flash
- Clarity over complexity
- Long-term value over short-term trends
To me, web design is about building trust.
What I Believe Good Web Design Should Do
Good web design should feel natural. Users shouldn’t have to think about where to click or what to do next.
My approach is built on:
- Clean structure and layout
- Strong usability and accessibility
- Mobile-first design
- Performance-ready foundations
- Ongoing maintenance and care
I don’t believe in overdesigning. I believe in design that works, today and in the future.
Why I’m Sharing This Journey
This story isn’t shared to impress.
It’s shared because behind every website is a human journey, one filled with learning, mistakes, and growth. I believe people deserve to know who they’re working with, how that person thinks, and why they care.
This is my journey from creativity to learning to responsibility.
And if you’re looking for a web designer in Malaysia who values long-term performance, trust, and clarity, you now know the story behind the work.
