Phantom Weapon Occultum: Why the Final Relic Stage Isn’t One More Quest
I cleared Obscurum back in April thinking the relic was basically done — turns out that was stage three of five, and Occultum, the actual finish line, showed up in Patch 7.55 asking for a checklist more scattered than the first three stages combined. Between work and the North Horn grind eating my evenings, I wasn’t finishing that checklist solo before Evercold, so I picked up a Phantom Weapon boost for the Occultum stage specifically and kept doing everything else myself.
Here’s what that checklist actually looks like, because “one more relic step” undersells it badly.
Phantom Weapon Occultum Requirements: 30 FATEs, 35 Duties, Item Level 795
Occultum takes an Eclipticum weapon (item level 790) up to 795, and it’s gated behind a Knowledge Crystal that doesn’t fill from grinding one activity — it wants a spread across nearly everything Dawntrail has. The important part is not difficulty, it is fragmentation:
- 30 FATEs across six Dawntrail zones
- Specific enemy kills in each zone
- 5 leveling dungeons
- 8 level 100 dungeons
- 7 normal-difficulty trials
- 3 Echoes of Vana’diel alliance raids
- 12 Arcadion normal raids
None of that is hard content. It’s just a lot of content, spread across systems that don’t overlap with anything else you’re already farming.
The Knowledge Crystal Breaks the Farming Loop That Worked for Obscurum
The earlier stages had a shape you could optimize — farm demiatma in one zone, bank tomestones, repeat. Occultum breaks that pattern on purpose. You can’t speed past it by picking one efficient loop, because the Knowledge Crystal needs input from dungeons, trials, alliance raids, and open-world zones all at once. Even if you keep roulettes in your routine, the checklist still pushes you into specific clears rather than one clean farming loop, so the efficient path isn’t obvious even to someone who’s done every other relic stage in the game.
Can You Skip Straight to Occultum If You Never Finished Obscurum?
The whole chain is sequential — Penumbrae into Umbrae into Obscurum into Eclipticum into Occultum — and each stage requires the previous weapon in hand before the next quest even opens. If you’re only now looking at Occultum and realize you never finished Obscurum on a job you actually want to relic, that’s not a shortcut you can take from here. You’re doing the earlier tomestone exchanges first, then the Knowledge Crystal checklist on top.
Is Occultum Worth Finishing Before Evercold Launches in January?
I play Sage on Sargatanas, character name Dessin Voclare, and if you’ve got the alliance raid roulettes and trial clears already in your weekly rotation anyway, Occultum mostly falls out of stuff you’re doing regardless — finish it yourself, it’s not that bad. The math changes if you’re starting the checklist from zero on a job you don’t play often, especially the Echoes of Vana’diel and Arcadion normal clears if those aren’t already part of your routine. That’s the part I paid to skip, not the whole relic. Evercold starts a new gearing cycle in January, so Occultum is a now-or-never decision for Dawntrail-era value — whatever job you’re finishing it for, it’s worth deciding now rather than mid-checklist. LepreStore also has FFXIV boosts for other parts of the game, if the relic ends up being the smaller problem next to everything else North Horn is asking for.
