What Information Is Public on a Snapchat Profile?

Less than people fear. Also less than people assume, because several things you would expect to see only appear when the account holder switches them on.

Snapchat splits every account in two. A personal profile only friends can see. A public profile anyone can open. Knowing which fields sit on which side is the whole answer.

Two Profiles, One Account

Snapchat is direct about the split. Its overview of profiles on Snapchat states that only your friends can see your personal profile, while a Public Profile is visible to anyone on Snapchat.

So somebody can be extremely findable and still have almost nothing on display. Two different settings doing two different jobs.

The same page adds something people rarely realise. A Public Profile is optional to use. When you post, you keep full control over where each Snap goes, who sees it and whether it is saved to the profile at all.

There Are Three Kinds of Public Profile

Worth knowing, because what you see varies with the type.

Public Profiles. Personal or Creator accounts sharing public content like Stories. The common one.
Professional Accounts. A setting some Snapchatters can toggle between Creator and Business. Newer and not available to everyone yet.
Business Profiles. Commercial and advertiser accounts, created only through Ads Manager and limited to users aged 18 or over.

A useful implication. Business Profiles are never created automatically, so if an account has one, somebody set it up deliberately in Ads Manager.

The Follower Count Is a Choice

This catches almost everybody out.

Snapchat gives account holders a switch for it. In the Public Profile settings, under Edit Profile, there is a toggle labelled Show How Many Follow Me.

Which reverses the usual assumption. On most platforms a follower number is simply there. On Snapchat, seeing one means somebody decided to display it.

No number showing does not mean zero followers.
It usually means the toggle was never touched.
Large creator accounts tend to switch it on. Ordinary users rarely bother.

What Always Shows Up

The fixed furniture of a public profile.

Bitmoji or avatar. Published at full resolution rather than the small circle the app displays.
Display name. Not unique. Plenty of accounts share one.
Username. Unique and permanent in practice, though hidden in search results on verified profiles.
Bio. Free text they wrote themselves, often the most revealing part of the page.

Snapchat lists bio, profile photo and cover photo among the things you edit to show fans. All of it was typed and published on purpose.

Content Appears Only If They Put It There

A public profile is a shelf rather than a feed. Things sit on it because somebody placed them.

Public stories, live for around 24 hours.
Saved story highlights, which stay indefinitely.
Spotlight clips the creator pinned.
Lenses, which appear automatically once published through Lens Studio.

Snapchat documents the full set in its rundown of Public Profile features. An empty-looking profile is normal. It means somebody has a public profile and has not published to it.

The Age Rules Vary

Worth being careful here, because guidance differs by source.

Snapchat states that Snapchatters aged 16 and over have a Public Profile by default in certain countries, with some differences between profiles for 16 to 17 year olds and those for adults. Business Profiles require you to be 18 or older.

So it varies by region and age band rather than being one fixed rule everywhere. Younger accounts get a more restricted version where they get one at all.

What Never Becomes Public

No setting exposes these. No tool reaches them either.

Friends lists and who somebody talks to.
Snap score, Streaks and Charms.
Chats, snaps and anything sent privately.
Location on the Snap Map.
Email address and phone number.

Friendship Profiles sit firmly on the private side too. Snapchat even notes that screenshotting one may notify that friend. Nothing like that applies to a public profile.

Checking a Profile Yourself

You need no account to read any of this. The Snapchat Profile Viewer opens a public profile in a browser, with the avatar at full size and the display name, handle and bio together.

Enter a plain username, an @username or a full profile link.
The public profile loads with whatever the account has published.
Nothing is sent to the account holder at any point.
