Why Stone Chips Damage Car Paint and How to Repair Them
A little piece of rock can damage or break your car paint. It usually comes in such a case: while traveling, a piece of road rock gets caught in and thrown by a vehicle’s wheel. This thrown rock then, like a shot rock, lands on your car at a certain speed and a very high impact force (that is, when it reaches your car and it was going at least 60miles/hour). If it does so, it will break away the surface of the car (car paint), and as a result, a dent will appear or, for peeling layers, it will lead to a metal base being uncovered (the original colour will start to show). The exposed car metal gets in contact with the atmosphere (oxygen and humidity), and when a little road salt from de-icing is present, it becomes the start of rusting very quickly. For small chips, the fix is simply – clean the area thoroughly and if there is any steel showing, prime it with primer paint – then cover the chip with colour-matched paint in really thin layers and finish it off with clear coat. After that, the car paint will look as good as new.
It is not a big deal for a pebble just a little smaller than your fingernail to inflict considerable damage on your car if you are going at high speed. The physical and paint thickness factors are the main reasons. All paint layers combined, factory paint is just about 100 to 150 microns in thickness, similar to the thickness of a paper sheet. A stone that rolls off a truck or lorry’s wheel on the motorway travels quite fast and when it hits, it will strike with a high-speed impact of about 60 / 70 mph of the car and a speed of 1 – / 70 miles per hour from the stone which the driver does not perceive in general. This type of contact causes lacquer, the colour and in some cases, the base metal, to chip off.
What Actually Happens When a Stone Hits Your Paintwork
Car paint consists of several layers which if you grasp them you will understand that a chip is quite serious damage more than cosmetic. The metal is covered with an electrocoat and primer that protect from corrosion and make sure paint sticks properly. Above there is a base coat, the part which actually shows the colour. Last but not least there is a clear coat, a protective layer that gives a shiny look and also protects the paint against UV light, chemicals, and minor abrasion.
The damage caused by the impact is more or less like breaking these brittle layers with a stone. A small hit may just damage or crack the clear coat, which although it doesn’t look good, is not urgent. When you have a much harder hit, it completely removes a piece from the surface of the chip down to the primer or metal level and that is where the problem starts.
Not only does the depth of the chip matter, but the place as well. Usually the front bonnet, the front edge of the wing, the lower doors, and the sills have most of the damage as they are more exposed to road debris. A regular motorway trip will lead to much more damage than an easy ride in town. Salt used for de-icing causes rapid corrosion that a chip invites so cars driven around winter roads will wear off sooner.
Why Ignoring a Chip Costs You More Later
A brand new chip doesn’t look like much, which is probably why people let it be. But here’s the catch – if you have very little or even totally bare metal on your car in British climate conditions, you might see the start of surface rust in just a few weeks. Unfortunately, oxidation doesn’t stop once it starts; it actually starts traveling under the paint around the damaged area and lifting the topcoat. Soon enough, the minor scratch is turned into a brown patch about the size of a coin.
This really complicates the situation as a simple chip you could have easily covered within ten minutes now takes the removal, treatment and priming of the underlying rust, beyond blending with the larger paint area. If it has spread too far then it will be a job on its own panel. Getting to such a body shop for this repair usually is a bill somewhere between 80 and 300 – it really depends on the panel and the type of finish of a car. Yet, it is quite an economy to be able to get the chip sealed early which will just require the price of a touch-up product and your half hour at spare time. Apart from all of that, there’s a resale aspect – you see, if a buyer sees a used car’s bonnet covered in stone chips and rust flecks that gives them the impression of neglect and they are willing to offer less for the vehicle even if it runs beautifully. How to Repair a Stone Chip at Home
Small chips are genuinely DIY territory, and the process rewards patience far more than skill. Start by washing and drying the area, then wipe it with a degreaser or panel wipe so no wax or road film sits between the old paint and the new. If there’s any rust in the chip, it has to be removed or treated with a rust converter first, because painting over corrosion simply traps it and it returns within a season.
Getting the shade right is the step people underestimate. Your car’s paint code is printed on a sticker inside the driver’s door frame, under the bonnet, or in the service handbook, and that code is what lets you order the exact factory colour rather than a rough approximation. This is where a proper colour matched car paint system makes the difference between a repair that disappears in daylight and one that reads as an obvious patch under sunlight. A silver that’s a shade too warm or a black that’s flat instead of metallic will always catch the eye.
Apply primer to any bare metal using the tip of a cocktail stick, keeping it level with the surrounding surface rather than proud of it, and let it cure. Then build the colour in two or three thin coats with drying time between each, because thin layers blend and thick dabs bulge. Finish with clear coat once the colour has hardened, extending it just past the repair. After a day or two of curing you can gently level any high spots with 2000 grit wet sandpaper and polish the area back to a shine.
When a Stone Chip Needs a Professional
Not every chip is a home job and you have to know when to get a professional to save your vehicle from looking worse than it was. A chip of the size of a pinhead or a match head is simple to handle with a touch-up kit. It is only when you have dozens of small dings across your car, a chip that is old and has rusted as well, or a chip on a metallic or pearlescent paint finish that is clearly visible in full daylight, that you start to have to rely on expert help.
Metallic paints are harder to blend because the aluminium particles will only be deposited and spread the same way as the factory if you do, so even brushing your touch-up paint is quite difficult. For example, on a door side edge, a sill or a bumper corner, where people don’t look closely, a little bit of the work that looks a tad off will still be quite satisfactory. On a flat area of the body that catches the light, your eye will probably never quite overlook it, and in that case, a smart repair operator or a workshop will be more than worth the money. The decision is fed by budget and the duration of driving you are going to have with the car. If you are going to keep your car for five more years or whatever you may call it and all you really want to do is prevent rust then it is a very good solution to make the repairs with a lot of paint that will still not show much. But, if you are the kind of person, who is proud of his/her finish, or about to sell it, going through a professional painting on the exposed parts will not only be worth it, but also very wise, while you take care of the hidden chips yourself.
