Why Terea Cannot Be Used in IQOS 3 or IQOS 2.4 Plus: Differences in Format, Chip, and Fixation System

Terea are incompatible with IQOS 3, IQOS 2.4 Plus, and all models outside the ILUMA line. This incompatibility stems from structural, electronic, and firmware-level differences. Original terea sticks are engineered specifically for IQOS ILUMA and contain a stainless steel–coated metal heating element inside the tobacco rod.

Physical Differences: Length, Diameter, and Filter Shape

Terea dimensions differ from HEETS:

  • length: 45 mm vs. 44.6 mm,
  • diameter: ~7.5 mm vs. ~7.2 mm.

The difference is small but sufficient to prevent full insertion into an IQOS 3 holder. Additionally, Terea lack the groove for the external heating blade — a feature essential for HEETS operation.

Absence of a Chip and Holder-Based Recognition

HEETS contain an RFID chip that communicates with sensors in the IQOS 3 holder. Without this signal, the session does not start.

Terea have no chip. Recognition occurs via changes in the magnetic resistance of the embedded rod. IQOS 3 cannot detect this signal, so the session is not initiated.

Different Session Control Algorithms

In IQOS ILUMA, the session starts automatically after stick insertion. In IQOS 3, a double button press is required. Session duration in ILUMA is fixed at 14 puffs. IQOS 3 allows early termination by the user.

Communication protocols between the holder and pocket charger also differ. ILUMA transmits status data via Bluetooth Low Energy — a feature absent in older models.

Practical Consequences of Incompatibility

Attempting to insert Terea into IQOS 3 leads to one of the following:

  • the stick does not seat fully,
  • the device vibrates but does not start,
  • an error appears (red blinking or specific vibration pattern).

Forced insertion may damage the holder mechanism. Firmware modifications or third-party adapters are not supported.

How to Determine Whether Your Device Supports Terea

ILUMA devices are identified by:

  • model name on the body: ILUMA, ILUMA Prime, ILUMA One, or ILUMA i,
  • a capless holder design,
  • a smooth cylindrical heating chamber with no slots.

Packaging always displays the Smartcore Induction logo and explicitly states compatibility with IQOS ILUMA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can HEETS be used in IQOS ILUMA?
No. HEETS do not physically fit into the ILUMA holder. Attempted insertion triggers an error.

What if I bought Terea but own an IQOS 3 DUO?
The sticks cannot be used. An ILUMA-series device is required.

Are adapters or converters available?
No adapters exist. The manufacturer does not produce cross-compatibility solutions.
