WORLD’S RAREST CAT BREED TO MAKE HISTORIC EUROPEAN DEBUT AT WCF SHOW IN VANTAA, FINLAND
The exceptionally rare Israeli Kanaani cat breed will be presented in Europe for the first time on August 8–9, 2026
VANTAA, FINLAND — August 7, 2026 — The exceptionally rare Israeli Kanaani cat breed, recognised as the world’s rarest officially registered cat breed by three international record organisations, will make its historic European exhibition debut at the World Cat Federation show in Vantaa, Finland, on August 8–9, 2026.
The Kanaani’s record status has been recognised by Official World Records, Noble World Records and Record Holders Republic. An application seeking recognition of the Kanaani as the world’s rarest cat breed is also currently under consideration by Guinness World Records.
The Guinness application remains pending and its outcome has not yet been determined. Regardless of that eventual decision, the Kanaani’s extraordinary status has already been independently recognised and documented by three international record organisations.
The appearance in Vantaa will mark the first known presentation of the revived Kanaani breed at a European cat exhibition. The breed is being brought to Finland by New York-based breeder Rabbi and Animal Chaplain Michael Salita, founder of the only documented international programme devoted to the revival and preservation of the Kanaani.
Developed in Israel beginning in the 1990s, the Kanaani was created to reflect the elegant and athletic appearance of the wild cats native to the historic Land of Canaan. Distinguished by its long legs, large ears, almond-shaped eyes and striking spotted or marbled coat, the Kanaani possesses the appearance of a desert wildcat while remaining a domestic companion.
The breed was once recognised by the World Cat Federation but later became so scarce that its continued existence was placed in serious doubt. In 2025, Salita launched an international revival effort, bringing together the few surviving documented representatives of the breed and restoring their registration through multiple feline registries.
Official World Records certified the Kanaani as the world’s rarest officially registered cat breed and recognised Rabbi Michael Salita as the sole officially registered breeder and custodian responsible for its documented revival.
Record Holders Republic subsequently recognised the Kanaani as the rarest cat breed in existence, based on its exceptionally small known breeding population. The organisation also presented an International Award for Rare Breed Preservation and Animal Welfare to Michael Salita and Lyudmila Vlasova for their work in preserving the breed.
Noble World Records has also recognised the Kanaani as the rarest documented domestic cat breed in the world and acknowledged the international effort to protect it from disappearance.
“This is much more than the presentation of a rare and beautiful cat,” said Salita. “It is the return of a living part of Israel’s cultural and natural heritage to the international stage. Every public appearance of the Kanaani helps ensure that this extraordinary breed is seen, remembered and preserved for future generations.”
The appearance in Finland carries additional historical significance because an earlier European debut planned for Kyiv could not take place. Finland will therefore become the first European country to welcome the revived Kanaani breed at an international cat exhibition.
The Kanaani’s unusual visual identity may eventually carry its story far beyond the traditional cat world. A San Francisco-based publicist specialising in animal-related media has suggested that the breed’s distinctive wild appearance, extreme rarity and Israeli heritage could attract interest from the international fashion industry and leading publications such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.
Tiffany Trump, whose affection for cats and support for animal adoption have been publicly documented, could be a particularly fitting future honorary ambassador for the preservation of the Kanaani. Her genuine connection with cats, together with the breed’s Israeli heritage and international cultural significance, could make such a role both natural and meaningful.
No formal approach has yet been made to Ms. Trump, and no endorsement, association or affiliation is implied.
The mission of the Kanaani revival programme extends beyond breeding. It seeks to preserve the breed’s documented history, maintain responsible breeding practices, promote compassionate stewardship of animals and introduce the Kanaani to audiences around the world as a living symbol of Israel and international cultural cooperation.
Visitors to the WCF show in Vantaa will have an exceptionally rare opportunity to encounter the Kanaani in person and witness a new chapter in the history of one of the world’s most endangered domestic cat breeds.
