Oxford Dog Behaviourist and Author Launches New Online Course to Help Owners Better Understand Their Dogs

Oxford, United Kingdom
Oxfordshire dog behaviour specialist and author Anthony Thomas has launched a new online course designed to help owners look beyond obedience and understand what is really influencing their dog’s behaviour.
The Calm Dog Framework is a comprehensive ten-module online course created to give owners a deeper understanding of their dogs while providing practical training they can apply in everyday life.
Created after more than a decade of professional work with dogs, and following the publication of Anthony’s book Reactive to Regulated: A Calm, Clear and Controlled Approach to Dog Reactivity, the course brings together behavioural science and the lessons learned from working hands-on with more than 1,000 dogs. Anthony’s book similarly explores the science, psychology and practical training principles involved in canine behaviour, emotional regulation and reactivity.
At the heart of the course is a question familiar to countless dog owners:
“My dog knows what to do – so why aren’t they doing it?”
For Anthony, the answer often lies in looking beyond the behaviour itself.
“Owners are frequently told what they need to teach their dog, but understanding why a dog is behaving in a particular way can be just as important,” Anthony explains. “A dog might have a perfectly good recall at home but struggle outside, or walk beautifully until another dog appears. That doesn’t necessarily mean the training has failed. Stress, excitement, emotional state, environment and the dog’s ability to process what is happening around them can all influence the behaviour we eventually see.”
From Reactive to Regulated to The Calm Dog Framework
Reactivity is one of the areas in which this approach becomes particularly important.
In Reactive to Regulated, Anthony explores why barking, lunging, pulling and other reactive behaviours can be the visible result of underlying fear, stress, frustration, anxiety or difficulties with emotional regulation, rather than simply behaviours that need to be stopped.
The Calm Dog Framework takes that broader principle and expands it into a complete course for owners of dogs of all ages and backgrounds.
“I wrote Reactive to Regulated specifically for people dealing with reactivity, but the underlying idea applies much more widely,” Anthony says. “Whether we’re talking about recall, pulling on the lead, over-excitement, barking or a puppy who simply finds the world incredibly stimulating, I want owners to become curious about why the behaviour is happening rather than immediately reaching for another technique.”
Ten Modules Designed for Real Dog Owners
The Calm Dog Framework is designed for ordinary dog owners rather than professional trainers, and no previous knowledge is required.
Across ten modules, owners explore their dog’s brain and behaviour before progressing through calmness and routine, foundation training, recall, lead walking and outdoor calmness, reactivity and barking, puppy development, diet and health, canine body language and communication, and finally applying their learning to long-term life with their dog.
The emphasis throughout is on combining understanding with practical application. The aim is not simply to give owners a collection of exercises to follow, but to help them understand when and why different approaches may be appropriate.
Each module also includes an extended reading list and a multiple-choice quiz, with an 80% pass mark. After completing all ten modules and quizzes, students undertake a final written assessment, which Anthony personally marks and provides individual feedback on.
“I wanted the course to feel substantially different from simply searching online for dog-training advice,” Anthony explains. “There is already an overwhelming amount of information available. One person says one thing, somebody else says the opposite, and owners can end up jumping from technique to technique. My aim is to give them a framework they can use to make better decisions for the individual dog standing in front of them.”
From Online Learning to a Full Day Working With Your Dog
For owners who want to put these principles into practice with Anthony in person, Oxford Dog Training Company also runs its One-Day Calm Dog Workshops in Oxfordshire.
The next workshop takes place on Saturday 3 October 2026 and gives a deliberately limited number of owners the opportunity to spend an extended day working with their own dogs under Anthony’s guidance.
The format provides something that can be difficult to recreate during everyday walks: the opportunity to work around other dogs and distractions in a controlled environment, alongside owners who understand why everyone is there.
Rather than expecting dogs to interact, owners can work at an appropriate distance and difficulty for their individual dog. The extended format also allows time to practise, pause, ask questions, receive feedback and then try again, rather than attempting to fit everything into a short training appointment.
For Anthony, the online course, his writing and the practical workshops are different expressions of the same underlying approach.
“The book allowed me to explore reactivity in depth, the online course allows owners anywhere to learn the wider framework, and the day workshops give me the opportunity to work directly with owners and their dogs,” he says. “They’re different ways of helping people achieve the same thing: understanding their dog better and becoming more confident about what to do next.”
Understanding Before Behaviour
Anthony has now worked professionally with more than 1,000 dogs and accumulated more than 15,000 hours of dog-related work. His experience ranges from everyday family dogs to dogs presenting with significant reactivity and complex behavioural challenges. His current approach places behavioural science, emotional regulation and practical real-world experience at the centre of training.
The philosophy behind The Calm Dog Framework is deliberately straightforward. Instead of beginning with:
“How do I stop this behaviour?”
owners are encouraged to first consider:
“Why is this behaviour happening?”
“After working with so many different dogs, one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that behaviour makes much more sense when you look at what happens before it,” Anthony says. “Better understanding leads to better decisions, and better decisions can lead to better lives for both dogs and their owners.”
