The Tailteann Cup
The Tailteann Cup is a fairly new Gaelic football tournament that started in 2022. Held once a year, it has become a second-tier championship event with Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) as the central host.
How Are Teams Selected for the Tailteann Cup?
A maximum of 16 teams compete in the Tailteann Cup. They are the lowest-ranking teams of the season that did not secure the proper qualification to compete in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. Hence, the Tailteann Cup is like a second chance for glory each season amongst Gaelic football teams that did not have the best performance in the original lineup.
What Tailteann Cup Events Are Taking Place This Weekend?
Two quarter-final matchups are set to take place for the Tailteann Cup on Saturday, June 17th. No matchups are scheduled for Sunday. Each team first stated in the matchups shows that the game will take place at their home stadiums.
The first event is Limerick vs Laois scheduled for 3 pm local time on the GAAGO television network. The matchup will take place at the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (TUS) Gaelic Grounds with Thomas Murphy as the referee.
The second event is Cavan vs Down scheduled for 5:15 pm local time on GAAGO. The matchup will take place at Kingspan Breffni with Seamus Mulhare as the referee.
All-Ireland Senior Football Championship
The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) started in 1887. Every 35th Sunday is when the final segment of the championship takes place. The winner gets the Sam Maguire Cup after the game finishes at Dublin’s Croke Park.
However, we are not at the finals just yet for this event. The group stages and some preliminary quarter-final events are taking place this weekend. Four of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship events are taking place on Saturday while the other five will happen on Sunday.
