Alliance of Cinema and Fashion at BRICS+ Fashion Summit

The recently concluded BRICS+ Fashion Summit brought together luminaries from the fashion industry for engaging discussions on the fascinating relationship between cinema and fashion. With notable contributions from European cinema stars like the illustrious Ornella Muti from Italy, the glamorous Pavleen Gujral from Bollywood, and the renowned Chinese actress Sienna Li, the event delved into the captivating interplay between these two creative domains.

During the session titled “Celebrity Style on and off the Screen,” industry insiders shared their insights on the impact of fashion in movies. These two intricately intertwined worlds constantly influence and shape each other, ultimately weaving into the tapestry of popular culture and the collective consciousness. While audiences typically perceive a movie as a complete picture, with its characters, narratives, soundtracks, and visuals, the costumes featured in these films play a pivotal role in revealing the essence of the characters themselves. Even if we might forget the plot of a movie or TV series after a few years, or even just weeks, the costumes from these productions can leave an indelible mark, etching themselves into our fashion lexicon.

Reflecting on the allure of Bollywood, Pavleen Gujral, a prominent star from the Indian film industry, described it as a realm of dreams and fantasies. According to her, Bollywood stands as a unique industry where fantastic imagery and extravagant costumes take center stage. Personally preferring a traditional style, Gujral proudly showcased her sari, exemplifying her desire to represent her country’s rich heritage on the international stage.

Sienna Li, an exceptional actress, entrepreneur, and founder of the rising fashion brand Soulwant, added her valuable perspective. With a background in jewelry design from Singapore and a master’s degree in art from the United Kingdom, Li brings a distinctive vision and taste to her brand. Commenting on the relationship between cinema and fashion, she emphasized how movies often introduce new trends and inspire audiences. People have a tendency to associate certain movies with fashion, contributing to the profound influence of cinema on our personal style and preferences.

Offering a different viewpoint, Dfaniks, a renowned fashion film maker, music producer, and the visionary behind the Cinettica Fashion and Art Film Festival in New York City, expressed a strong belief in the interconnectedness of the film and fashion industries. Inspired by films spanning various genres, from mainstream cinema to dedicated fashion films, Dfaniks highlighted the significant role that fashion plays in all forms of filmmaking. Undoubtedly, both domains are deeply intertwined and possess the ability to ignite trends.

Furthermore, Ornella Muti, the famous Italian film actress, producer, and businesswoman, shared her insights during the plenary session titled “Made in BRICS+. National Brands – The Basis of the Single Market.” Muti emphasized the importance of personal style for actresses, stating that they should always stay true to their own fashion sensibility. For her, luxury alone does not dictate her choices. The actress prioritizes beauty as the defining factor when selecting brands, favoring pieces that elicit a genuine wow factor when she tries them on.

The BRICS Fashion Summit proved to be an enriching platform not only for industry professionals but also for international film stars. They are now setting their sights on the upcoming Moscow fashion week, which taking place in Moscow from March 1st to March 8th, where they will continue to shape and influence the fashion landscape.
