An AI Market Model That Shows Its Work: How RegimeSignal Reads the Full S&P 500 Cycle

By Kip Lytel, CFA

Most market tools give you one answer: bullish or bearish. That is not how markets actually move. A bull market slips into a pullback, a pullback can turn into a correction, a correction can become a bear market, and every bear market ends in a recovery. Investors need to know where they are in that cycle and what is most likely next, not just which way an arrow points.

That is the problem RegimeSignal was built to solve. It is a browser-based research platform from Cronus Market Intelligence, LLC that tracks the full S&P 500 cycle with four separate machine-learning signals, each tested on data it never saw in training, and each shown with the conditions and limits behind its call.

Four signals, one for each turn in the cycle

Instead of one model trying to answer everything, RegimeSignal runs four focused signals. Each answers one question: is a pullback coming, is a correction coming, is a bear market forming, and is a recovery underway. The separation is the point. A single composite score hides which risk is rising. Four signals tell you which one.

Signal What it watches for Precision when it fires False-positive rate Test window
Bear market A drop of 20% or more 86% 2.5% 304 months
Correction A drop of 10% or more 84% 4.1% 154 months
Pullback A drop of 5% or more 83% 6.5% 154 months
Recovery The turn back up after a decline 82% 1.5% 154 months

Walk-forward, out-of-sample results. Precision is the share of times a signal fired and the move followed. These are research results, not a trading record.

Averaged across the four, that is 84% Average Accuracy when a Signal Fires. The bear market signal has identified 8 of 8 bear markets since 1950. Its roots go back to research I began in 1993 at the Drucker School, and I used it at my own investment firm for more than 20 years before turning it into a product anyone can use.

Tested the hard way

The most common failure in financial machine learning is a model that looks brilliant on the data it was built from and falls apart on anything new. Every RegimeSignal figure comes from walk-forward testing: the model is trained only on data available up to a given month, scored on what happened next, then rolled forward and repeated. Nothing it was graded on was available when it was built.

The record was then audited. All 612 monthly decisions were re-run and matched exactly, and an independent PhD review concluded the work was validated with qualifications. Those qualifications are published on the platform too, along with the tests the model did not pass. A track record you can check is worth more than a perfect chart nobody can reproduce.

A model that shows its work

What the platform shows matters as much as how it was tested. Every reading comes with the conditions behind it, how similar readings played out historically, the sample size and the window, and what would make the call wrong. The method, the base rates and the statistical tests are all on the page. That is what separates a research tool from a bullish/bearish indicator.

RegimeSignal also includes an AI assistant that answers questions in plain English from the platform’s own live readings and published method, not from general internet knowledge. Ask it why the model reads what it reads, and it shows the same figures you see on screen. Ask it something it cannot know, and it says so.

What you get

  • The current market regime and the four signal readings, refreshed daily from live data.
  • The probability of each next move, with the history behind it.
  • Alerts when a signal fires or the regime changes.
  • The Weekly Market Outlook newsletter, with the model’s call and what changed.
  • The AI assistant for plain-English answers on any reading.

Try it before you decide anything

Most research software hides behind sales calls and signup forms. RegimeSignal does the opposite. Anyone can open the full live platform for 15 minutes at cronusmarketintelligence.com with no signup, no email and no card. Subscriptions start with a 7-day free trial. More about the platform is at regimesignalai.com.

Markets reward people who see the shift before consensus does. The goal of RegimeSignal is to give every investor the same cycle-level view large institutions build for themselves, and to show exactly why it says what it says.
