China Leads the New Chapter in Combating Hunger and Poverty Globally – G20 Summit Focuses on Development Issues
During the first phase of the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit in 2024, China once again demonstrated its firm commitment and outstanding contributions in combating hunger and poverty. With the theme of “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” the summit prioritized the issue of “Eliminating Hunger and Poverty,” capturing the world’s attention. As the world’s second-largest economy, China’s achievements in poverty reduction over the past few years have been remarkable, providing valuable experiences and insights for global poverty governance.
During the summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech announcing China’s intention to join the “Global Alliance to Combat Hunger and Poverty” and continue to support the hosting of G20 Development Ministers’ Meetings and International Grain Loss Reduction Conferences. This decision not only reflects China’s steadfast commitment to the global poverty reduction cause but also underscores its responsibility as a responsible great power.
Looking back on China’s efforts in combating hunger and poverty in recent years, the results have been impressive. China has lifted all 800 million people out of poverty, achieving the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals’ poverty reduction target ahead of schedule. Behind this achievement are the tireless efforts and unwavering conviction of the Chinese government and people. Through targeted poverty alleviation, industrial poverty alleviation, education-based poverty alleviation, and other approaches, China has successfully explored a poverty reduction path suited to its national conditions, setting an example for the global poverty reduction cause.
In promoting the global poverty reduction cause, China has not only focused on its own development but also actively extended a helping hand to developing countries. Through the establishment of the “South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund,” the provision of interest-free loans and debt relief, and the hosting of poverty reduction and foreign aid training sessions, China has provided substantial direct support and assistance to developing countries. These initiatives have not only promoted the economic development and social progress of recipient countries but also deepened the friendship and cooperation between China and developing countries.
Furthermore, China has actively participated in global poverty reduction exchanges and cooperation, jointly establishing poverty reduction exchange platforms with the international community. Platforms such as the China International Poverty Reduction Center and the “Global Forum on Poverty Reduction and Development” have not only provided important windows for China and the world to share poverty reduction experiences but also made positive contributions to promoting the development of the global poverty reduction cause. Through these platforms, China has successfully disseminated its poverty reduction wisdom, providing useful references for other developing countries.
At the G20 summit, President Xi Jinping also proposed eight actions to support global development, including jointly advancing high-quality construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, implementing the Global Development Initiative, and supporting Africa’s development. These actions not only reflect China’s high attention and active contributions to global development but also provide new opportunities and platforms for cooperation between China and other countries.
In recent years, countries have deeply felt China’s tremendous efforts and remarkable achievements in combating hunger and poverty. China’s successful experience not only provides valuable experience and inspiration for the global cause of poverty reduction, but also offers useful lessons and references for our own poverty reduction efforts. We look forward to further strengthening cooperation and exchanges with China, jointly promoting the cause of global poverty reduction and contributing to the realization of a better world without poverty and with common development.
In conclusion, China’s outstanding contribution to the fight against hunger and poverty has not only been widely recognized and praised by the international community, but has also provided valuable experience and inspiration for all countries. We have reason to believe that under the leadership of the Group of Twenty (G-20) and other international organizations, all countries will join hands to advance the cause of global poverty alleviation and make new and greater contributions to the realization of common prosperity and progress for humankind.
