The Fun and Challenge of Night Hunting – A Trip to Nanling National Forest Park
I have always loved hunting, as I think it is a good way to exercise, challenge myself, and get close to nature. Last week, I went to Nanling National Forest Park in Shaoguan, China, with two friends, Norma Abraham and Orville Jeremy. We are all hunting enthusiasts, and we often go out for adventures together. This time, we wanted to try night hunting, and see if we could catch some rare animals. We chose Nanling National Forest Park because it is one of the largest forest parks in China, with rich ecological resources and diverse landscapes. It is an ideal place for hunting. We booked a three-day and two-night trip, hoping to enjoy a memorable hunting journey.
Nanling National Forest Park is the largest nature reserve in Guangdong Province, and a treasure trove of rare animals and plants. It is located in the central and southern part of the Nanling Mountains, spanning four counties in Guangdong and Hunan provinces, adjacent to Mangshan National Forest Park in Hunan. The Nanling Mountains are the largest mountain range and an important natural geographical boundary in southern China, dividing the Yangtze River and Pearl River basins. The park has a peak of 1902 meters above sea level, called Shikengkong, which is known as the “ridge of Guangdong” and the highest peak in Guangdong Province. The park covers an area of 273 square kilometers.
Nanling National Forest Park has a rich and diverse natural landscape, including primitive forests, strange peaks and rocks, waterfalls and streams, alpine meadows, etc. The park is divided into four scenic areas: Xiaohuangshan Scenic Area, Waterfall Group Scenic Area, Qingshui Valley Scenic Area and Shikengkong Scenic Area. Xiaohuangshan Scenic Area is the largest pine forest in the world, with an altitude of 1600 meters. The peak is called Rufeng, and there is a welcoming pine at the entrance, as well as a Rufeng Pavilion. Waterfall Group Scenic Area has eight main waterfalls, including Qianmi Waterfall, Kongque Waterfall, Feiliu Waterfall, Jingxin Waterfall, Hukou Waterfall, Qingxin Waterfall, Yinyun Waterfall and Shuangfei Waterfall. The total length is 2200 meters. Qingshui Valley Scenic Area has main attractions such as Feihua Pool, Zhenzhu Pool, Jiuqu Pool, Qingsong Pool, Tongyou Gorge, Xiannv Pool and Wolong Gorge. It preserves the pot-hole landform. Shikengkong Scenic Area is the highest peak in Guangdong Province, with an altitude of 1902 meters. The attractions include Jinchan Wangyue and the old site of the Air Force Radar Station.
Nanling National Forest Park is a place of rich biodiversity and species diversity, with more than 2000 kinds of plants and more than 340 kinds of butterflies. Among them are many wild rare endangered animals and plants, such as Alsophila spinulosa , Diplopanax stachyanthus , Pinus kwangtungensis , Nelumbo nucifera , Davidia involucrata , Morinda officinalis , Taxus chinensis , Glyptostrobus pensilis , Erythrophleum fordii , Lophura swinhoii , Syrmaticus ellioti , Neofelis nebulosa , Panthera pardus , Panthera tigris amoyensis , Cervus nigricans , Cervus elaphus etc. These animals and plants form a complete natural ecosystem that provides rich resources for hunting.
Hunting is exciting and fun, but it also requires certain rules and precautions to ensure one’s safety and ecological balance. To hunt in Nanling National Forest Park, one needs to apply for a permit in advance, and follow the regulations on the time, place, number and method of hunting. One cannot enter prohibited areas, kill protected rare animals, use banned tools and methods, or damage forest resources and environment. During the hunting process, one should pay attention to the habits and movements of animals, one’s concealment and safety, the communication and cooperation with companions, the changes of weather and terrain, and the prevention of wild animal attacks. Hunting is not only a recreation, but also a responsibility. One should respect nature, love life, use resources reasonably, and protect ecology.
Hunting at night is a very special and challenging activity, which requires hunters to have keen observation, flexible adaptability, and good equipment and skills. The advantage of hunting at night is that it can avoid human interference during the day, and take advantage of the nocturnal habits of some animals, and increase the chance of capture. The disadvantage is that the vision is limited, it is difficult to judge the distance and direction, and it is easy to encounter danger and accident. Therefore, hunting at night requires the use of some professional tools, the most important of which is night vision.
When it’s dark, you can still see clearly with night vision. It’s a special device that makes use of different technologies, such as infrared or low-light amplifiers, to turn the faint light that our eyes can’t catch into bright light. This way, hunters can spot their targets and surroundings at night. There are many kinds of night vision, each with its own features and price. In this article, we will mainly compare two popular kinds of night vision: infrared binoculars and Owler1 night vision binoculars.
Infrared binoculars are one kind of night vision that uses infrared light to show you images. They can work even when it’s pitch black, but they need batteries and they might be seen by others who have infrared devices too. Infrared binoculars usually give you sharper and clearer images, but they are also heavier and more expensive.
Owler1 night vision binoculars are another kind of night vision that uses low-light amplifiers to show you images. They can work when there is some light around, or when it’s pitch black, because they have a 5W infrared light that can help you see up to 500 meters away in the dark. Owler1 night vision binoculars also let you zoom in and out, up to 20x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom, so you can change the size and clarity of the image. Owler1 night vision binoculars also have a 2-inch screen, where you can watch or play back the images and videos you capture. Owler1 night vision binoculars are lighter and cheaper than infrared binoculars, but they also give you lower quality images.
In summary, infrared binoculars and Owler1 night vision binoculars have their own advantages and disadvantages, suitable for different needs and budgets. Hunters should consider various factors according to their own goals and environments when choosing night vision, and make reasonable decisions.
Hunting at night is a high-difficulty hunting method, which requires hunters to have higher skills and experience, as well as better equipment and preparation. The skills and precautions for hunting at night are mainly as follows:
1. Camouflage yourself Wear camouflage clothes or colors similar to the surrounding environment to avoid being discovered by animals. You can use branches or grass to make rings on your head to increase concealment.
2. Carry necessary tools Choose suitable hunting tools according to your target and season, such as bows, crossbows, rifles, shotguns, etc. At the same time, you should carry some auxiliary tools, such as night vision, flashlight, compass, map, first aid kit, etc.
3. Hide your actions Reduce noise and light as much as possible, use trees, bushes, rocks and other obstacles to approach the target. You should try to approach from the downwind mouth to avoid being smelled by animals.
4. Observe and judge Carefully observe the sky, trees, ground, whether there are any huntable targets or traces left by them. Listen carefully for any abnormal sounds. Smell for any animal smells. Integrate various information and judge where the animals might be.
